Organized Crime 2006 The Download, Beamsville Bench VQA

Santa BarbaraCounty 081

Organized Crime is a boutique winery on the Beamsville Bench in Ontario’s Niagara Peninsula. It’s small, whimsical and perhaps even humble compared to the grand tasting rooms not too far away in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

But the high quality and artistry of the wine makes Organized Crime a very fond memory from our tasting trip a couple of years ago.

Green Dragon and I were accompanied by Glorious T and Ace of Bass. We each bought a bottle of The Download, 2006 vintage. I managed to hold on to ours until just last week, when the cork was popped to celebrate Glorious T’s new promotion.

Download is a Bordeaux blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot with a rich berry bouquet. Raspberries and cherries predominate in this mid-bodied wine. The wine is known for its supple tannins and extraordinarily long finish.

This is the winery’s flagship wine and uses grapes from the Beamsville Bench VQA which is a wine region with a treasure chest of great producers. The wine is not too “hot” with just 12.2% alcohol and the cost was $25 Canadian.

This bottle is a download of playfulness, flavor and fun. We need to head back to resupply!

Zmor 2007 Russian River Valley Gewurztraminer

Santa BarbaraCounty 080

This Gewurztraminer is bone dry – something we find tres refreshing. That’s the style we’ve come to love – a little beebop of residual sugar is OK, too. But nothing more than off-dry if you please.

We mostly enjoy Gewurz from the Finger Lakes or Ontario, so a bottle from the Russian River Valley tickled our fancy. This bottle was the first in an evening to celebrate a friend’s recent promotion.

This has nice apricot and apple flavors without the rose petal that turns off Green Dragon. It is well balanced and the finish has good length. My only beef would be that it is finished in oak. It isn’t noticeable until the end. It’s not completely objectionable, but it isn’t necessary either.

Anyway you look at it, the Russian River Valley produces outstanding grapes. To deliver a fine Gewurztraminer like this shows a great range.

Not the apex for Gewurz, but certainly worth it if you pick it up under $20. Should be splendid with shrimp.

Palmina Winery: Santa Barbara County Winery Visit

Ghetto and wine aren’t typically a great pairing. In fact when I heard about the Wine Ghetto in Lompoc, CA, I decided that was one place we could avoid during our California swing. After all, we prefer the grand winery buildings and scenic rolling hills of vines.

Luckily reason prevailed, or maybe our thirst for really good wine. Adam Mahler of Ampelography suggested I should seek out the Ghetto for some of the top boutique wines in Santa Barbara County.
Santa BarbaraCounty 007
The Wine Ghetto is located in an industrial park in Lompoc behind a Home Depot. Quite a contrast to our visit to Gainey Vineyard the day before. Gainey Ranch has 1,800 acres including Arabian horses.

The buildings look like warehouse space, but serve as  very functional wine-production areas for more than a half dozen top wineries.

We had no high expectations standing outside the door to our first stop: Palmina. It had been a dreary, raining drive from Solvang and it looked like we were pulling up outside a tire store.

Once we walked inside Palmina, it was a very different story! Santa BarbaraCounty 008
The tasting room was inviting and contemporary, finished with warm Tuscan colors that befitted the winery’s focus on Italian varietals.

The winery was founded by Steve Clifton in 1995 and the focus is producing a full line of wines crafted from Italian grapes grown locally. The goal is not to emulate the Italian wines, but interpret the styles to the growing conditions and vineyards in Santa Barbara County.

They do a darn good job.

Our tasting began with a 2010 Arneis, Honea Vineyard. Interestingly, I had never had this grape in my life until just a few days before when I had selected it as the white wine for a board meeting dinner. Arneis is a rich and aromatic grape. This vino had a nuance of nuts with white flowers.Good but not up to the standard of the Italian Arneis.

The 2010 Malvasia Bianca, Larner Vineyard, was more to my liking. This is a floral wine with a creamy mouthfeel. It's a summery wine with citrus balanced with a rich body.

Our tasting team dubbed the 2010 Dolcetto a “drinking all day” wine – one that is smooth and balanced. It has bright flavor notes of blackberries on a sunny hillside with a lingering finish tickled by soft tannins.

The 2009 Alisos, Alisos Vineyard, is considered to be a “multi-dimensional work of art.” This is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot. The grapes are barreled separately and a portion of the Sangiovese grapes are dried into raisins over a period of 100 days in the appassiemento style. The grapes are then rehydrated and fermented until dry, yielding a nectar that is barrel aged for six months. Then the three components are blended together in a barrel to age.

This awesome wine was Green Dragon’s favorite. It rocked with flavors of dried raspberries and orange zest over black cherry and earth. It is a mere $30 for this special bottle.

Next up was the 2007 Nebbiolo, Santa Barbara County. This was simply superb and my favorite up to this point. Grapes from three outstanding vineyards (Sisquoc, Honea and Stolpman) are blended together to showcase the region. The bouquet gushed forth from this wine with earth, spice and plum. On the palate there was black cherry, a bit of tea and minerality. A cool wine that would pair well with a variety of meals.

Our server then offered us a taste of the 2008 Undici Sangiovese, Santa Ynez Valley. This is winemaking at its best! The passion of the winemaker comes though in an intriguing wine that ripples with dark chocolate, black cherry and blackberries. A third of the wine is co-fermented with Malvasia Bianca and the wine is aged for 30 months in a combination of Gamba barrels and neutral French oak. Has tons of dark fruit flavor and tannins that support, but don’t kill the delicate fruit flavors. I had to have a bottle of this!

Although it was rainy outside, my saying of “It’s always sunny in the tasting room” was certainly true at Palmina. We also had a chance to sample their “wine on tap.” One red and one white wine (selected by the winemaker but undisclosed) is available in “growler” jugs. The wine is very good and priced absurdly low. However, we had to pass on this as it didn’t look like it would transport back to the Midwest very well.

Palmina is making some amazingly good wines – in the Ghetto!

Gainey Vineyard: Santa Barbara County Winery Visit

Santa BarbaraCounty 006Gainey Vineyard in California’s Santa Ynez Valley rocks, rolls and thankfully made it on our list during our recent trip.

Green Dragon and I had been in San Diego where I had a board meeting. We took the train north and met up with my cousin Mary and her husband Cleve. We then sped off (somewhat silently) in their Chevy Volt for wine country in Santa Barbara County.

Our reservations were at the Hamlet Inn in Solvang, a funky Danish-inspired town. Luckily Santa BarbaraCounty 003Mary’s a good navigator and pointed out that our path would swing near Gainey – a winery that was highly recommended.

The afternoon was waning, but we still had more than an hour of tasting time. The Volt was plugged in and was soon filling up with juice. The same could soon be said for us.

We began with the 2009 Limited Selection Santa Ynez Valley Sauvignon Blanc. This wine is blended with Semillon, a classic combination. Although pleasing, it wasn’t special.
Santa BarbaraCounty 004
The 2009 Limited Selection Chardonnay was smooth and bright. The wine is finished for 10 months in French Oak and has just the right component of oakiness. Malolactic fermentation adds a rich, creamy mouthfeel.

We began to find our groove with the 2009 Limited Selection Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir. It has mild aromas of strawberry and black cherry. The mid-bodied wine is balanced with a touch of spice. This is only available at the winery and retails for $48.

Jammy with berries and plum is how our quartet described the 2009 Limited Selection Santa Ynez Valley Merlot. It’s a lavish wine that has a long, rich finish. That makes it a crowd favorite. The wine is blended with a dash of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

The 2008 Limited Selection Syrah has an edge of earthiness with a healthy streak of spice riding atop black cherry and blackberry. It is smooth on the finish with chocolate flavor notes. The fruit for this wine came from six different vineyards during a very difficult harvest – which resulted in a reduced crop, but more intense flavor.

Our finale was the 2010 Limited Selection Riesling. Green Dragon and I love Riesling, especially when done dry. This wine meets the criteria with a 0.9% residual sugar. This wine retails for only $15 and would be a fantastic pairing with spicy food. Honeysuckle and peach predominate.

Gainey Vineyard is part of a large sustainable family farming operation. The Home Ranch, an 1,800-acre spread in Santa Ynez, has 100 acres of vineyard, Arabian horses, 1,000 acres of rangeland and 600 acres of organic fruits and vegetables.

The winery produces 18,000 cases annually with a focus on wines with optimum flavor and aromatics that reflect the unique characteristics of the vineyards. It’s considered one of the best wineries in California’s Central Coast. There is a unique tasting room (actually two), a great giftshop and beaucoup vines right out the back door.

Santa Barbara County Wine Country

Santa BarbaraCounty 037Is there life beyond Napa and Sonoma? Yes indeed, and the wine there is pretty tasty.

We recently visited 10 wineries in Santa Barbara County and found the wine to be top shelf and the area a beautiful place to visit – without the gridlock and tour buses of some other major wine destinations.

Santa Barbara County is part of the sprawling Central Coast appellation in California which extends from San Jose in the north to Santa Barbara in the south. It lies along 250 miles of rolling seacoast. The climate is mostly ideal for wine grapes and varieties from southern France, Italy and Spain thrive here.

Within Santa Barbara County there are four AVAs: Santa Maria Valley, Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Rita Hills and Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara.
Santa BarbaraCounty 057
Santa Barbara County is unique because of the unusual mountain configuration with an east-west orientation. The valleys open directly to the Pacific Ocean. This allows the inland flow of fog and ocean breezes, resulting in one of the coolest winegrowing regions in California. The growing season here is longer than other growing areas, allowing the grapes to have an unusually long “hang time” on the vine. This results in some world class wines.

During our recent trip we visited 10 wineries: Arcadian Winery, Buttonwood Farm Winery, Foxen 7200, Gainey Vineyard, Koehler Winery, Lincourt Vineyards, Palmina, Rancho Sisquoc Winery, Rideau Winery & Vineyards and Zaca Mesa Winery & Vineyards.

Along the way we found excellent wine, funky restaurants, great towns and beautiful scenery. Stay tuned as we being our series of reports in the days ahead.
