Michel-Schlumberger 2007 La Brume Chardonnay

Wine review by Tasting Team Member Dr. J

Hoped to get a review sooner than this but I've been enjoying Christmas ales lately!

I didn't really start to appreciate Chardonnay until last year.  It is quickly becoming one of my favorite wines.  I happened upon a closeout at The Anderson's a while back on the 2007 Michel-Schlumberger la brume Chardonnay for $9.99.  If I remember correctly, this was regularly a $20 bottle.

Chilled, this wine is lightly floral with trace hints of oak on the nose.  On the palate, peach and pineapple dominate with undertones of vanilla.  As this wine warmed, it really started to open up and display more character.   Loads of butter and peach are apparent while it remains fresh and crisp.  The wine is very creamy with light tannins and acids on the finish for a nicely balanced wine.  I really enjoyed this Chardonnay.

Chateau Ste. Michelle & Dr. Loosen Eroica 2010 Riesling

A cry came from the bathroom: “This wine is really great!” Green Dragon was enjoying a hot bath with a glass of wine and was sipping the 2010 Eroica Riesling.
Eroica is a partnership between two Riesling icons – Washington State’s Chateau Ste. Michelle and Germany’s Dr. Loosen. This is a delicious symphony of Old and New World winemaking made with superb Washington grapes.
This was one of the coolest vintages on record, resulting in concentrated flavors and vibrant acidity. Eroica has flavors of citrus zest, lime, white peach and a subtle minerality. It’s a pleasing balance for most wine lovers – there is a slight sweetness balanced by a smooth acidity.
Ernst Loosen and Chateau Ste. Michelle winemaker Bob Bertheau give each grape special attention. Grapes for this wine came from Zillah Ranch in the Yakima Valley and Evergreen Vineyard, near the town of George, Washington.
To protect flavor intensity, grapes were harvested at night when the vineyard temperatures were coldest. Loosen and Bertheau considered dozens of small lots, each with slightly different characteristics, before selecting the final blend.
All this attention really pays off. You can taste it in the glass. Eroica’s appeal is immediate, but the complexity draws you back for another sip. Bravo!

Centine 2008 Toscana IGT

This is an Italian red blend that can be had for a song. It’s low cost and high drinkability make it a good choice for an every day wine.
It is a Super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Sangio and Merlot ensure it has a silky texture and the Cab gives it structure.
Green Dragon bought this wine at the grocery store for about $9. At that price point the Centine (Chen-tee-nay) is a great value.
This is a youthful blend with plenty of cherry fruit and a soft feel. The wine is flecked with flavors of leather and a slight spiciness.
It’s accessible, affordable and a dependable pick from Tuscany.

Hiller Creek Estates 2009 Estate Riesling, Prince Edward County VQA

Thank goodness we have friends from Canada! They picked up this bottle of Hiller Creek Riesling during a recent trip and brought it to a party at our hacienda.

We are big fans of Ontario wines, especially the dry Rieslings and the expressive Cabernet Francs. This is the first we’ve tried from Hiller Creek.

Prince Edward County is Ontario’s newest wine region. It is located on the opposite side of Lake Ontario from Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Hiller Creek has 24 acres of vineyards planted to Gamay, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Vidal. The winery features a 150-year-old barn that serves as winery, cellar and tasting room. Appropriately enough, a creek runs through the estate.

I hadn’t glanced closely at the label during the party and assumed this was a semi-sweet to sweet Riesling. I was pleased to find out that this has just a touch of sweetness which is balanced by a nice acidity.

The flavor notes are lime and peach and there is a mineral character that creates just the groove we like in a Riesling. The alcohol level is 10.5%, much lower than “big” reds which can go above 14%. That adds to the lightness and makes this a versatile refresher. This uses 100% estate grown grapes.

Unfortunately, the 2009 vintage is now sold out – but we expect that 2010 rocks as well. The cost for this wine was $20 CA.

Hiller Creek is making some great wine. We encourage you to give them a taste.

Il Borghetto Toscana Rosso

Wine Review by Glorious T
After a particularly challenging day at the office, we felt like a glass of wine was just what the doctor ordered. We went across the street to the small, locally owned Calvino's.

It's a friendly place, and as usual, Fred was buzzing about.
The place was hopping and we sat at the bar, which is plain and accessorized by staff and regular customer photos, along with wine corks and crates. It's a comfortable, relaxed place. Since we just wanted one glass, Fred guided us to a daily special.

At just $6 per glass, the Borghetto Toscana Rosso was a delightful choice. We enjoyed the blend, which is predominantly Sangiovese. It drinks like a nice Chianti, and was nice on its own. Nicely floral, spicy bouquet. Light and fruity.

The bottle sells for $9.99, and Calvino's charges a $5 corkage fee. We highly recommend this wine for its high QPR.

Winemakers Term 2012 California Vintage Excellent

A California vineyard worker celebrates the completion of harvest. George Rose Photo. The 2012 California wine grape harvest yielded generous amounts of high quality fruit, and winemakers across the state are describing this year's vintage as "excellent," "outstanding" and "ideal." "The 2012 vintage will offer consumers in our growing national and international markets fantastic choices," said Robert P. (Bobby) Koch, President and CEO of Wine Institute. "The California winegrape harvest is estimated at 3.7 million tons, up from 3.3 million tons in 2011."

"Mother Nature smiled upon the California wine harvest this year with a bountiful crop of amazing quality," said Kathleen Heitz, President of Heitz Wine Cellars. "The diversity and depth of talented winemakers throughout the state promise some exciting and vibrant wines from the stellar 2012 vintage."

"The 2012 harvest has been exceptional," said Frank Cabral, Director of Grower Relations for Trinchero Family Estates. "Moderate weather throughout the growing season has put little pressure on the vines, and provided grapes with well-balanced chemistries. The 2012 harvest is making up for the low yielding 2011 crush, with most varieties picking at above average yields. The 2012 harvest is shaping up to be one that will become known for its abundance of fruit and quality of wines."

"The 2012 harvest on the North Coast can be summed up in one word, 'outstanding,'" reported Bob Blue, Winemaker at Bonterra Vineyards in Ukiah. "It was back to a normal harvest picking timeline, only slightly later on the calendar than an average year, with an abundance of sunshine. Overall the quality has really been special this year, the fruit is ripe and concentrated. There were no disease issues with any of the grapes. The Pinot Noir has amazing fruit intensity, with classic varietal tones of strawberry and spices. Chardonnay has wonderful concentration and a mélange of fruit flavors from peaches to apples and lemon. Merlot has beautiful color and ripeness, with rich blueberry flavors. The Cabernet has outstanding flavors."

"This was one of the more idyllic growing seasons that we've had," concurred Aron Weinkauf, Winemaker and Vineyard Manager at Spottswoode Estate Vineyard and Winery in Napa Valley. The fairly mild weather allowed us to wait for fruit maturity in order to make our preferred style of wine. We were pushed to our limit to accommodate the quantity of fruit we harvested, but I am extremely happy with the overall quality and balance of the wines."

"This year we have been blessed with ideal weather," continued Hank Wetzel, Managing Family Member of Alexander Valley Vineyards in Sonoma County. "The harvest has been excellent. Growing conditions throughout the year have been ideal for producing a bumper crop of mature grapes with balanced flavors. In the spring, our vines set a large crop. During the summer, we had an abundance of California coastal "sweater" weather, fog in the morning, and warm sunshine in the afternoon, often sending temperatures into the mid 90s and then quickly cooling off after sunset. These daily temperature swings help make California, Sonoma County and the Alexander Valley great places to grow wine grapes. This daily cyclical temperature shift, occasionally hitting 50 degrees, continued into September ripening up fruit evenly and slowly, allowing us to bring in harvest at a steady measured pace. "We are now harvesting Cabernet Sauvignon. Clusters are packed with tiny bluish black flavorful berries."

Paso Robles had more heat, and the crop level was not quite as abundant as in the North Coast, but we had similarly high quality fruit. "Overall, we're excited about the 2012 harvest in Paso Robles," said Jason Diefenderfer, Winemaker at Hope Family Wines.

Janet Myers, director of winemaking at Franciscan Estate and Mount Veeder Winery, had this to say. “What a fantastic harvest. It was a low rainfall year, with a return to more normal summertime temperatures versus 2010 and 2011. While the crop was on the heavier side, three heat waves during September and October really helped propel the vines along to achieve excellent ripeness. Color is deep, and the wines are very structural and concentrated. We are very pleased with how things are turning out.”

Michael McCay, Owner and Winemaker of McCay Cellars in Lodi, is also enthusiastic about the harvest: "I am very excited about 2012! I love the brightness and the deep, rich flavors we are getting across the board. The Zinfandels are upfront but also showing great potential. I think 2012 has the potential to outperform 2010, which was even more "perfect" in terms of numbers and ease of picking. The 2010 Zinfandels were great, but at this point in time, the 2012s taste even better! All of our 2012 Zinfandels are finishing at alcohols lower than 15%—most of them closer to 13.5%. With such intense flavors, we couldn't ask for much better! I really believe it's going to end up being the best wines we've ever made."

Millefiori 2009 Rosso Delle Venezie IGT

This Millefiori rosso (red) from Italy is made from Corvina and Merlot grapes grown in vineyards near the town of San Pietro in the Verona province.  It caught my eye because of the unique appassimento technique used in its creation.
This is an IGT wine, a category of wines that falls above table wine, but below the more regulated DOC and DOCG designations. However, Super Tuscan wines (some of the best on the continent) are typically IGT wines, so don’t leap to assumptions about quality.
The appassimento technique is a rare one in which the grapes are dried out before fermentation – basically turned into raisins. In this wine, the Corvina grapes are placed in small wooden crates and placed in the “fruttaio,” a well-aerated loft, and are left there to dry at a controlled temperature and humidity.
During this “appassimento” the grapes will lose up to half their original weight in water. This drying process concentrates the flavors of the grape. Amarone, one of Italy’s most famous and delicious wines, is also made using the appassimento technique.
This is an enjoyable wine, but falls short of being a “baby Amarone.” Round and rich, there are flavors of dried fruit and chocolate and a distinct flavor of prunes. It has a lush, full finish with splashes of cherries.
A couple days later I enjoyed the last glass from the bottle and found the raisin flavor quite pronounced. This wine is tasty and a good value, costing about $13. It has whet my appetite for a good Amarone.

Dry Creek Vineyard 2008 Meritage, Sonoma County

We are big fans of Meritage. Who wouldn’t be?

Meritage (pronounced like “heritage”) is the American version of a Bordeaux blend and the primary grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Like the French, American makers of Meritage have discovered that a well conceived blend of grapes can hit the target in ways that a single variety cannot.

The Dry Creek Vineyard 2008 Meritage has depth and complexity, but the blend makes it very accessible. The 2008 blend is 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 17% Cab Franc, 14% Malbec and 6% Petit Verdot.

I decanted this bottle for about 30 minutes before we enjoyed it with our meal of chicken fajitas. Was this the ideal pairing? Hard to say, but I was in a Meritage mood it ended up as a quite nice match.

In the glass this is red to brick red with a medium body. The aroma is a mash of berries.

Our first sip was strong with tannins, but then retreated into more delicate flavors. There is plum and currant on the palate with a touch of tartness on the long and sophisticated finish.

The 2008 vintage was challenging with several weeks of frost followed by heavy winds and finally fires. The winemaking team navigated tricky conditions to produce a winner of a wine.

The vines average 20 years and the vineyard terrain is a combination of benchland and hillside. The wine is aged for 22 months in a combination of French and American oak. DCV 2008 Meritage retails for $28.

This is a stylish Sonoma bottle to savor at a price that isn’t hard to swallow.

Full disclosure: We received this bottle as a marketing sample.

Nobilo 2011 Icon Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough

If there is one place you can get bang (or maybe zing) for your buck, it is the Marlborough region of New Zealand. For $10 or less you can bag a completely satisfying Sauvignon Blanc.
In recent months my mantra has been to focus on fewer bottles of wine, but of higher quality. With this in mind I reached for the top shelf at the wine shop and grabbed the 2011 Nobilo Icon Sauvignon Blanc, which is a step up from the economy Sauv Blancs from New Zealand.
One whiff signals the trademark citrus zest of the New Zealand style. Upon sipping, splashing lemon and grassy flavor notes are pronounced. There also is a crackling acidity, which makes you smack your lips and pour another glass.
The Icon label uses specially selected Sauvignon Blanc grapes from top vineyard blocks in several Marlborough subregions, each contributing its own nuances. The blocks are cold fermented separately using a variety of yeasts to culminate in a symphony of flavor.
I paid $19 for this bottle and it’s a nice value. This is a rich, full bodied wine that pairs naturally with seafood.

Two Rivers Chateau Deux Fleuves Vineyards 2008 Vintner’s Blend

Somehow we missed the Two Rivers Winery when we made our last trip to Colorado. We visited about a dozen wineries and came away impressed with the quality of the high desert vino.
All was not lost, however, while we were waiting in the airport at Grand Junction, we noticed a dining area and they had a display of Colorado wines, including this beauty. We soon were packing it into our carryon luggage.
The winery was built from the ground up in 1999 outside of Grand Junction and focuses on just six wine varieties: Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Syrah and Port. The Vintner’s Blend is 60% Syrah and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. That’s a dynamite combination.
Dark red fruit flavors ripple through this wine, which has a solid structure of tannins without hitting you with an oaken club. My first reaction was that this wine has wonderful balance. You enjoy the deep, richness of blackberry and briar. After your sip, it lingers still.
This is Colorado cool that you can enjoy in your glass.

Party Provides Superstorm Sandy Experience Plus Tastes of Great Wine

Superstorm Sandy is no cause for celebration. Not in the least.

We did, however, want to bring a group of our friends together to celebrate Green Dragon’s return from two weeks of volunteering with the Red Cross in New Jersey. Just like Sandy, we hit them in a way they couldn’t imagine!

The Shelter Experience was Green Dragon’s idea and she tried surprising even me with what she had in mind. When our 20 or so guests arrived, the house was dark with the exception of some candles. Each couple received a flashlight and was ushered into the kitchen and family room, where a blue tarp was spread on the floor.

Before long we started with our meal, still sans lights. Just like those at the Red Cross feeding stations, it was served in a Styrofoam clamshell container. The main dish was a beef patty covered with gravy accompanied by canned green beans and pears plus a slice of white bread. The beverage was bottled water. (This is not how most parties at our house go!)

After “enjoying” the meal in the dark, Paul Dye, a Red Cross volunteer from Michigan who had worked with Green Dragon, shared photos of their work helping out victims of Superstorm Sandy. The two had worked in an ERV (Emergency Response Vehicle) delivering hot meals to those in need. They started in Princeton, New Jersey, and then moved down to Tom’s River.

More than 5,700 Red Cross workers from all 50 states were on the scene helping. At one point more than 7,600 people were staying in shelters. There were more than 3.3 million meals and snacks handed out.

The power and devastation of Sandy was sobering. We’re thankful that volunteers like Paul and Green Dragon give of themselves to help. Among our guests were friends Wayne and Becky who have repeatedly visited Mississippi to help families rebuild after Katrina.

Our lights eventually came on. The mood brightened as we switched to some tastier appetizers and a nice selection of wines.

Our opening selections were Columbia Crest Horse Heaven Hills
2009 Merlot and Dry Creek Vineyard 2011 Sonoma County Fumé Blanc. This are a couple of people pleasing wines suitable for larger gatherings and did not disappoint.

Wine Chick and Sax man brought a bottle of the 2010 Kaiken Malbec from Mendoza. Named after a wild goose from Patagonia, this is a winning Malbec with ripe fruit flavors. It has a nice lushness and a medium body. As I sipped more, the herbal dimension of the wine emerged. For about $12, this is one of the best Malbec bargains you’ll find.

Unknown to Green Dragon, I had set up a special “hydration station” in the basement with a sign warning about standing water and live wires.
Before the presentation I went downstairs and decanted a bottle of Cougar Vineyard 2007 Sangiovese, Temecula Valley.

Cabinator and I snuck downstairs and enjoyed a glass before emerging to share the decanter with everyone. Cougar Vineyard specializes in Italian grape varieties and all of their wines are estate produced.

The Cougar “sangio” was exceptional. Sangiovese is a key component of Chianti and also Super Tuscan wines. In fact, the 2007 Cougar is a Super Tuscan blend of 67% estate Sandiovese with 33% estate Cabernet Sauvignon. This is an expressive wine with bright cherry notes. It was luscious with a mellow texture.

Cheers to all those who volunteered to help during Sandy and we remember all those who suffered through the storm and the aftermath.
